20 January, 2025
The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has launched a new website and an enhanced TANCIS system designed to facilitate the clearance of cargo at ports, airports, and border crossings.
During the system's inauguration on January 20, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, TRA Board Chairman Mr. Mussa Abas Uledi stated that the TANCIS system will reduce face-to-face interactions between TRA and taxpayers, as all operations will be conducted online. The new website will also simplify access to information.
Mr. Uledi noted that, the upgraded TANCIS system is expected to increase TRA's revenue from customs, as all tax assessment activities will be conducted fairly through the system. He mentioned that the system has been integrated with 36 other institutional systems and urged the connected institutions to ensure their systems operate effectively with TANCIS.
He highlighted that there have been several challenges and complaints from stakeholders regarding service delivery through in-person interactions. Therefore, the implementation of this system will minimize physical contact and enhance the quality of services at Tanzania's ports and border stations, a change that will be supported by the TANCIS system.
Earlier, welcoming the Board Chairman, TRA Commissioner General Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda stated that the enhanced TANCIS system aims to meet user demands and improve TRA's operational efficiency in customs.
Commissioner General Mwenda emphasized that the system will significantly reduce the time required to track cargo entering the country from various locations, as traders will be able to access multiple institutions simultaneously through the system without leaving their offices. He added that the TANCIS system will promote equity in tax payments, allowing everyone to know the amount they are required to pay, which will enhance tax collection. Regarding the new TRA website, Mr. Mwenda stated that it will serve taxpayers effectively.
