ZANZIBAR SINGLE WINDOW SYSTEM SET TO TRANSFORM TRADE AND CUSTOMS OPERATIONS
02 June, 2026
The introduction of the Zanzibar Single Window System is expected to significantly improve the business environment in Zanzibar by streamlining customs clearance procedures and reducing administrative barriers faced by traders.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, during the launch ceremony held at Madinat Al Bahr Hotel in Mazizini, Zanzibar, TRA Zanzibar Deputy Commissioner Mr. Saleh Haji Pandu said the platform will enhance service delivery by enabling multiple government agencies to operate through a single digital gateway.
He noted that prior to the development of the system, importers and traders were required to visit several institutions to complete regulatory and customs procedures, a process that often resulted in delays and increased operational costs.
Mr. Pandu described the launch as a major milestone in the government’s digital transformation agenda, aimed at strengthening inter-agency coordination, improving trade facilitation, and supporting economic growth.
He added that integrated digital systems play a critical role in curbing fraud, boosting revenue collection, and increasing the government’s capacity to finance development projects.
Meanwhile, Director General of Information Technology Services at the Korea Customs Service (KCS), Mr. Kim Ki-dong, whose institution is supporting the implementation of the project, said the initiative will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of customs operations in Zanzibar and across Tanzania.
He reaffirmed KCS’s commitment to working closely with Tanzania Customs in developing modern digital solutions that improve customs administration, particularly through the adoption of advanced electronic technologies.
On his part, President of the Zanzibar Freight Brokers Association (ZFB), Mr. Omar Hussein Mussa, highlighted the challenges currently faced by customs agents, including lengthy cargo clearance procedures that require engagement with more than 14 different institutions.
According to Mr. Mussa, the Zanzibar Single Window System will simplify these processes by providing a centralized platform that allows traders and customs agents to complete required procedures more quickly, efficiently, and at a lower cost.
He said the current clearance process involves extensive paperwork and multiple institutional approvals, while the new system is designed to align Zanzibar’s trade procedures with international best practices and modern business standards.
Once fully operational, the Zanzibar Single Window System is expected to accelerate trade-related services, strengthen accountability in tax and revenue administration, and create a more attractive environment for investment and commercial activities in Zanzibar.
