WCO CALLS FOR DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND STRONGER GLOBAL COOPERATION TO STRENGTHEN CUSTOMS OPERATIONS

14 May, 2026

The Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO), Mr. Ian Saunders, has called for accelerated digital transformation and enhanced international cooperation as key drivers in strengthening global customs systems amid rapidly evolving trade dynamics.

Speaking on Thursday, May 14, 2026, during the 32nd Governing Council Meeting of the World Customs Organization – Eastern and Southern Africa (WCO-ESA) held in Zanzibar, Mr. Saunders said customs administrations worldwide are facing increasingly complex challenges driven by the fast-changing nature of global trade.

He pointed out that the expansion of cross-border e-commerce, the growing use of artificial intelligence, and continuous technological innovation are reshaping international trade flows, requiring customs institutions to adopt more modern, efficient, and transparent systems.

Mr. Saunders underscored that digital transformation is no longer optional but essential for improving operational efficiency, enhancing data management, and strengthening the ability of customs authorities to respond to emerging risks.

He further highlighted the importance of stronger collaboration between customs agencies, law enforcement authorities, border regulators, and the private sector in order to effectively combat illicit trade, protect legitimate businesses, and safeguard global supply chains.

Mr. Saunders also emphasized the need for continued investment in modern digital infrastructure, streamlined procedures, and sustained international cooperation to ensure customs systems remain responsive to the evolving global trade environment.

He concluded that the WCO-ESA meeting provides a critical platform for member countries to share experiences, strengthen regional solidarity, and advance collective efforts aimed at improving customs performance for the benefit of global economic development.
