TRA TO STRENGTHEN FAIR AND PROFESSIONAL TAX ADMINISTRATION TO BOOST VOLUNTARY COMPLIANCE - CG MWENDA
07 July, 2026
The Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, has reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to implementing the directives of the President by strengthening voluntary tax compliance through fair, transparent, and professional tax administration that builds taxpayers’ trust in TRA.
Speaking during TRA’s 2025/2026 financial year performance review meeting, Mr. Mwenda said the session would also deliberate on strategies for implementing the directives issued by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, during the 30th Anniversary celebrations of TRA and the Presidential Taxpayer Awards held on July 1 this year.
He emphasized that TRA will continue to treat all taxpayers with fairness and respect while taking appropriate legal action against those who deliberately evade taxes, ensuring they comply with the law in a professional and respectful manner.
Mr. Mwenda further stressed that there will be no “unjust taxation,” noting that taxpayers should not deprive the nation of revenue through tax evasion, just as TRA will not subject taxpayers to unfair or inaccurate tax assessments.
He added that increasing voluntary tax compliance requires strengthening taxpayers’ confidence in the tax system by ensuring fair tax administration, promoting accountable use of tax revenues, and continuously improving TRA services to facilitate business growth and make tax compliance easier.
Mr. Mwenda also noted that the strong partnership between TRA and taxpayers has been instrumental in the Authority’s remarkable revenue collection achievements over the past 30 years.
He revealed that annual tax revenue collections have increased from approximately TZS 21 trillion when President Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed office to TZS 37.96 trillion, representing growth of more than 77 percent.
