The Tanzania Truck Owners Association (TATOA) has commended the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) for measures aimed at creating a more conducive business environment for truck owners and supporting the continued growth of the transport sector.

Speaking during a joint meeting between TATOA leaders and the TRA Management, led by the Commissioner General, Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, held at TRA offices in Dar es Salaam on August 7, 2026, TATOA Chairman, Mr. Elius Lukumay, said the Government’s efforts to address tax-related challenges affecting truck owners would create greater opportunities for growth in the transport business.

Mr. Lukumay said small-scale truck owners had for a long time been calling for relief from Value Added Tax (VAT) obligations in line with arrangements applicable to operators with larger fleets. He said the latest measures were a welcome development that would help expand the transport business and contribute to broadening the tax base, given the sector’s significant contribution to various economic activities.

“We kindly request the Commissioner General to convey our sincere appreciation to Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, for this significant step. It has the potential to transform the transport sector, expand business opportunities and create more employment opportunities,” said Mr. Lukumay.

Also present at the meeting was Mr. Deogratius Massawe, a representative of the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF), who commended the Government for measures aimed at facilitating the transport business. He noted that the sector plays a critical role in supporting trade and economic activities within Tanzania and across international borders.

For his part, the Commissioner General of TRA, Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, said the Government’s measures form part of broader efforts to facilitate business and strengthen the transport sector, which is closely linked to numerous other economic activities both domestically and internationally.

Mr. Mwenda emphasized that TRA is committed to facilitating business by addressing barriers that hinder business growth and resolving both tax and non-tax challenges faced by taxpayers and business operators.

He said a supportive business environment enables businesses to grow, generate better returns and contribute more effectively to national development through increased tax compliance and revenue contribution.

The Commissioner General further urged business owners and taxpayers facing challenges to visit TRA offices and seek assistance, assuring them that the Authority remains committed to working with the business community to address their concerns and enable them to operate their businesses smoothly and successfully.
