SMUGGLED GOODS AND COUNTERFEIT PRODUCTS THREATEN FAIR TRADE AND GOVERNMENT REVENUE – VICE PRESIDENT NDEJEMBI

04 September, 2026

The Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, joined manufacturers and industry stakeholders at the 2026 President’s Best Producer Awards held on September 2, 2026, at the Superdome in Masaki, Dar es Salaam. The event, officiated by the Guest of Honour, Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Deogratius Ndejembi, recognised and celebrated the contribution of local producers to economic growth and national development.

Speaking at the event, H.E. Ndejembi strongly condemned the smuggling and illegal importation of counterfeit goods, noting that such practices undermine fair competition, deprive the Government of rightful revenue, and pose risks to the health and safety of Tanzanians.

He stressed the importance of strengthened collaboration among Government institutions, manufacturers and other stakeholders in combating smuggled and counterfeit goods, protecting local industries, enhancing Government revenue, and ensuring that consumers have access to safe and quality products.

TRA’s participation and sponsorship of the event reflects the Authority’s commitment to strengthening engagement and collaboration with key stakeholders, particularly the manufacturing sector. The platform also provided an opportunity for TRA to promote tax awareness, encourage voluntary and timely tax compliance, and foster a shared understanding of the critical role of taxation in driving economic growth and national development.

The President’s Best Producer Awards recognise outstanding producers for their contribution to promoting domestic production, creating employment opportunities, stimulating economic growth and supporting Tanzania’s socio-economic development
