PARLIAMENTARY BUDGET COMMITTEE APPLAUDS TRA FOR STRONG REVENUE PERFORMANCE AND TAXPAYER-CENTRED REFORMS
31 May, 2026
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Budget has applauded the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) for its strong performance in revenue collection, noting that the institution has consistently surpassed the monthly tax collection targets set by the Government.
Speaking during a meeting between the Committee and TRA management in Dar es Salaam on May 30, 2026, Committee Chairperson Mashimba Ndaki praised the Authority for its dedication and effectiveness in delivering on its mandate.
The Committee also welcomed TRA’s dedicated approach to serving large taxpayers, describing it as a strategic initiative that strengthens compliance while reinforcing the principle that every eligible taxpayer contributes fairly to national development.
Ndaki noted that there is a widespread misconception that large businesses do not pay taxes, emphasizing that major taxpayers play a vital role in government revenue generation and account for approximately 40 percent of TRA’s total collections. He added that the establishment of a specialized department for large taxpayers reflects the Authority’s commitment to fostering compliance and maintaining close engagement with key contributors to the economy.
He further highlighted the remarkable transformation within TRA, particularly in service delivery and customer relations. According to him, improvements in professionalism and communication have encouraged more citizens to meet their tax obligations voluntarily, replacing the fear that was once associated with the institution.
Deputy Minister for Finance, Eng. Mshamu Ali Munde, also commended TRA for broadening the tax base and strengthening its relationship with taxpayers, efforts that have significantly enhanced voluntary tax compliance.
Meanwhile, TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Juma Mwenda expressed appreciation for the Committee’s visit to the Large Taxpayers Department, stating that the engagement would further encourage taxpayers to continue fulfilling their obligations.
Mwenda reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to fairness and equity in tax administration, stressing that tax assessments are guided by the capacity and obligations of each taxpayer. He emphasized that those required to contribute more will do so, those with smaller obligations will pay accordingly, and individuals not liable for taxation will not be unfairly charged.
He concluded by urging citizens to continue paying taxes voluntarily and to report cases of tax evasion, underscoring the importance of collective responsibility in supporting the country’s economic growth and sustainable development
